The Algiers Charter Schools Association (ACSA) administers three programs in conjunction with numerous non-profit groups to increase both the knowledge and interest of students and teachers in the educational field of social studies/history. Through a Teaching American History (TAH) grant from the U.S. Department of Education, ACSA, in partnership with Loyola University, will provide advanced study opportunities for New Orleans area history teachers by offering three summer institutes. Although the primary goal of the TAH grant is to encourage teachers to participate in additional courses during the summer to improve their History knowledge, ensuring that there is a strong connection between the TAH summer program and the classroom is an imperative focus. Another program that ensures classroom connection with primary source documents are the six school-year ACSA workshops offered to teachers in partnership with the extremely cooperative Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) and the renowned New York-based Gilder Lehrman Institute (GLI) of American History.
Through a sponsorship from the GLI, ACSA host a free, elective based, Saturday Academy to explore various American History topics with students. Another well-respected educational group, The Pearson Foundation, has partnered with ACSA to provide instruction for the video portion of the Academy which includes students producing a DVD on their favorite topic from the Academy.
